The Short Man Meg Brown Mysteries Book 1 edition by Joshua Cejka Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Joshua does it again! Meg is an easy girl to love and Josh has a fun way with words that I just love.

If you like crime mysteries, strong women (REAL women, not caricatures like you see in films) and good writing this is the book for you!
A nearly perfect blend of Holmes and Noir, with the plus of a dry humor. Short but very enjoyable! It was little gems like the line "His eyes were bloodshot and the smile he gave her didn't meet them." that made this a joy to read! I've already bought the second and third short stories in the series, and plan on getting the rest as soon as I'm done with those!
I really liked this. I found it an unusual combination of slightly prosaic, well-crafted writing with the normally sparser genre of a detective story, but it worked. I loved the rich descriptions and intricate characters, presented in a way that allowed you to not only imagine the scenes unfolding but taste, smell and touch them. Excellent penmanship and beautiful characters. Very much enjoyed the Sherlockian mental leaps that evolved.
When you do something a lot, or you research something ad infinitum, you tend to notice when someone else does it well. This is so well written- great dialogue, beautiful metaphors, unexpectedly personified things. I sort of expected the main character to be a dog, but she wasn't. She made up for it with a great sense of humor and hints at more to her backstory. A fast and short but so satisfying story- I simply must buy the rest now!
Little forewarning, The Short Man is a short story, not a full-length novel. If you rush to buy the version, or other e-books for you people that do that, it looks a little shorter than you were expecting don’t say you weren’t warned. But hey, if you don’t have a lot of reading time, something short and to the point and without all the extraneous words of some full-length novels this might be just the piece for you.

The Short Man is the first of the Meg Brown Short Mysteries series by Joshua Cejka. If you like cop procedurals, murder mysteries or anything involving detectives with near Sherlockian observational and reasoning skills this is probably the story for you. Meg Brown is a 37-year-old, recently divorced homicide detective is somewhat uncanny knack of seeing much more than her older, more experienced partner, Riggins, could ever hope to see. This current case involves a dead parking enforcement person at a Midwestern college and a short sniper.

Really, besides maybe wanting a tad longer of a story, my biggest problem with this piece was how they made someone 5 foot tall sound like they were freakishly short. 5 foot tall or short, I get it, but as someone 5 foot tall it’s not that short. It really isn’t. Personal height bias aside however, it’s a decent quick read, and I’m looking forward to reading more of the series.

I’d say this one gets a good four out of five red pawed squirrels fleeing the scene.
This is definitely a short story. By the author's own words, it comes in at around 6,500 words. However, he manages to pack a lot into those few words. You quickly learn about Meg Brown and her incredible powers of observation. She also has a quirky sense of humor that you see right off the bat and I quite enjoyed. While you move quickly from the crime to whodunit, it all works quite well. Joshua Cejka has managed to make short crime fiction a thing you can quickly read in small snippets of time. It's great for anyone who's short on reading time but loves crime fiction.

The biggest drawback to the entire story were the minor errors. While they didn't bother me a whole lot while I was reading, I did pick up on them. All in all, this was an enjoyable story and I look forward to reading the rest of the Meg Brown Mysteries. On the bright side, there are even a few novel-length ones appearing as well. I can't wait to get to those!
A fun short read. Meg Brown is a detective on the Minneapolis Police Department. She is called to a local college campus when the body of a campus security officer is found shot. She's barely into this case when another body turns up. Meg needs to use her Sherlock Holmes style powers of observation to piece the mystery together before more bodies pile up.

The story is well-written and tight. The mystery is developed nicely in this short length. Meg Brown is smart, with a dry sense of humor that adds to the enjoyment of the story. It's a nice example of the genre that will entertain and amuse any reader.

My only issue was with several mechanical errors in the text. Yes, errors slip by, but there were more than one or two, and they popped me out of the story for a second or two each time. I would still reccommend this to anyone who likes mysteries and shorter works. I will be reading the other Meg Brown stories in the future.
